RV Repair: 89 Pace Arrow Batteries, 6 volt batteries, fleetwood pace arrow

Question
Hi Garry. I just purchased an 89 fleetwood pace arrow 454 chevy, 28 ft. My cranking battery just went down a brand new Interstate battery (completely drained). I am still in the process of learning the motorhome and trying to work out the bugs. Upon further investigation, the manual says that the motorhome comes with 2 special deep cycle 6 volt batteries. However in reality the Motorhome has a deep cycle marine 12 volt auxilliary, and a regular cranking battery (the one that drained). Do you know what the original configuration was with this motorhome, and was it 2 6 volt batteries for the auxilliary system and one 12 volt cranker or what. The manual is not specific. Also what would be the difference in 2 6 volt batteries hooked in series or one 12 volt as long as the specs are correct? (Deep Cycle) Hope you can Help!

James

Answer
The original configuration should have been 2- 6 volt batteries. In theory, this has more amp hours, however a single 12 volt battery works well also.  As far as your chasis battery draining, The two systems are separate and you either have something that is on or shorted causing the battery to go down that quickly.
