RV Repair: 15000 BTU Dometic Brisk-Air Unit FREEZING, 15000 btu, freezing point of water

Question
I just last week bought a 34' 2006 Coachmen Chaparel with a 15000 BTU Brisk-Air unit. I set the unit @ 70 degrees and it freezes during the night. I have not carried to dealer yet just wanted to be informed when I talk to them. The temp outside was in the 90's.

Answer
Hi Robie:

Normally, the units work great at 70 degrees. The unit may be a little low on refrigerant, and if that is the case, the leak must be found and repaired, otherwise the problem will keep repeating itself. If an a/c unit is low on refrigerant, the temperature of the cooling coil drops below the freezing point of water, then the coil totally freezes up.

Another thing to check would be the thermostat calibration, making sure it does actually cut off the compressor at 70 degrees, and not 65 degrees. You also should check to be sure the air filters are clean. If they get dirty, the air flow will be less that designed, and the evaporator coil will freeze up.

Those three things mentioned above are the usual problems related to evaporator freeze-up situations.

If I can be of further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me again.
