Saturn Repair: shifter not engaging, car starts but can put into gear, brake light switch, 1995 saturn sl2

Question
1995 Saturn Sl2 1.9 starts fine but automatic will not budge.Cant tow because fear of damaging transmission...

Answer
Hello. All cars today have what's called a shift interlock solenoid. It prevents the shifter from coming out of gear unless the key is in the run position and your foot is on the brake. It sounds like that solenoid has stopped working. First check all fuses under the hood and inside the car. There are 2 fuseboxes. If all fuses are good then step on the brake pedal and verify with the help of an assistant that the brake light are on. The brake light switch energizes the shift solenoid. If the lights are coming on you most likely have a bad shift lock solenoid. In that case you would need to remove the center console to access it. Not that difficult of a repair. Good luck. And If you wanted to have it towed to a shop you could because the car is front wheel drive. They would tow the car by lifting the front wheels.
