Thank you for your help. We have a 1999 Saturn SL1 Automatic and it has a clunk when it goes into second gear.

Hello,  does the vehicle have any other symptoms?  Does it delay or bang into reverse?  Banging or harsh engagement into 2nd gear is usually accompanied by a delay and/or harsh engagement into reverse or a total loss of reverse whe the car has been driven for awhile and is at full operating temperature.  A common problem is that the input shaft nut becomes loose, and would need to be replaced. Which isnt all that big or expensive of a job.  But on the other hand it could possibly be the valve body which runs about 600 for the part. A pressure test would properly diagnose a faulty valve body. Hopefully the shaft nut has just become loose.  Good luck. feel free to ask anymore questions.
