Saturn Repair: Whining in 5th gear, 1999 saturn sl1, clutch disc

Question
I have a 1999 Saturn SL1, Manual Trans. recently it has started a loud Whining when i shift into fifth gear, not in any other gear even shifting down from fifth it stops in the other gears. and along with that when the clutch is disengaged there is a pulsating drag/ticking...im not sure where it is coming from but i suspect the cluch. could u please help me out with fixing these problems. Thank you

Answer
Hello ,  by your description its sounds like its time for a new clutch disc , pressure plate , and release bearing. The noise at idle is most likely the release bearing. Also be sure to inspect the flywheel for any signs of hot spots and warpage. You might want to change that also. For the noise in 5th. Gear.it is not necessary to open up or remove the entire transmission. Fifth gear is located behind the end cover which is removable and serviceable from on the vehicle via the drivers side wheel housing. I would remove and inspect the gears , synchros , and associated bearings and replace as necessary. It is not a time consuming job. Be careful when reinstalling the end cover as there is a NOTCH on the inside of the cover that has to line up with the slots on the washer on the shaft. Extrememly important. Hope this helps. Feel free to ask any more questions. Jim.
