Saturn Repair: SC2 manual transmission feels sticky, rare problem, transmission specialist

I have a 2001 SC2, and lately the stick shift feels sticky, like there's a sludge build-up in the "H" pattern. It's the worst between 2nd and 3rd gears, but I can feel it in all. My mechanic says it's something like rings that need replacing, that would require dropping the engine to fix, he's have to refer me to a transmission specialist. Can you explain what the problem might be, and is this a typical problem of Saturns? I'm wondering if this is a good time to get a new car, or just repair this one and continue driving it into the ground. It's only got 85,000 miles.

Mabe he is talking about the sychronizers, I'm not really sure cause this problem is a rare problem, I haven't come across yet. You may want to trade it in, cause trans problems can get a little expensive.......how bout tradin it for an Aura (once you drive it you'll love it)lol
