Saturn Repair: Oil light blinking, 1997 SL2, oil pressure gauge, correct oil

Question
Hi Chris,
My wife drives a 1997 SL2 sedan. It has been working fine. However, 6 months ago she noticed that the oil light would intermittently blink. Lasting about 5-10 minutes, then spontaneously shuts off, no correlation to engine rpm. Often multiple episodes in one trip. The oil level is okay. She also took it to a mechanic who told her that he opened up the engine and found "no sludge" and also replaced the sensor. Sadly, the light still blinks. The car still runs fine. Any suggestions? Also, is it worth the cost to find out? Thanks in advance, Greg

Answer
Greg,
With a new sensor, and correct oil level, the only thing that cannot be ruled out is oil pressure.  You could have a faulty oil pump causing your light to come on and off.  The only way that you will know for sure is to have a technician hook up an oil pressure gauge and monitor your engine for problems.  Other than that, you might be looking at a wiring or PCM (engine computer) problem.  Neither an oil pump or PCM are cheap, but well worth it if you plan on owning that vehicle for a while.  Hope this helps.
