Saturn Repair: Saturn SL2 (1997) sudden electrical problem?, saturn sl2, electrical problem

Question
My 97 Saturn SL2 very suddenly today refused to come out of second gear while driving.

I immediately thought the transmission fluid may be low and stopped to check it.

It was fine. The car however would not start again and I had to wait, acted like the battery was low and started again after several minutes (sluggishly).

Now however not only will it not shift gears but ALL panel gauges (speedometer, gas indicator, temp and Tach) stay at zero (no readings at all)... plus the AC fan will not run and all electronics are sluggish or gone.

I know this seems electrical but why would the transmission also be effected?

Any ideas I can get would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Answer
Debra,
Battery voltage issues cause strange things to happen sometimes.  I would have the battery, alternator and starter checked.  You can do this for little to no charge at your local parts store.  Your transmission is controlled electic signals from the engine's computer, so that symptom is not impossible.  Hope this helps.
