is it possible to drop the transmission from
underneath, or does it need to be pulled with the engine?

 If you take the trans from the bottom, you will have to let that side of the cradle down.  It is possible, but without shop tools like a lift, it can be difficult.  You will have to support the weight of the engine with a cross-fender brace, if you have one.  Hope this helps.
