Saturn Repair: Saturn SL Engine Noise, wild goose chase, evaporative emissions

Question
Hi.
I have a 2002 Saturn SL (1.9L SOHC) that I have kept in proper maintenance and only has 29,000 miles on it. Recently (about 2 months or so) I noticed that the engine made a squeeking noise while idling (around 800-1,200 RPM). Over time this has gotten a little bit worse, and every now and then the "Service Engine Soon" light will come on, then in about 100 miles or so, will turn back off.

Any idea on what might be causing this? I read that the "Sevice Engine Soon" light usually has something to do with emission sensors (says the manual), so I don't even know if the two might be related.

Thanks

Answer
Russell,
Good job on proper maintenance!  One day I should tell everyone about the woman who went 27K miles without changing her oil.  She wanted to file suit against Saturn because they wouldn't warranty her engine.  Anyway, as far as your squeak, that's hard to tell over the internet.  I would probably have your serpentine belt looked at.  It could be glazed or cracked, causing your noise.  There are many other possible causes for your noise, but at almost 30K, that could be a likely one.
Your SES light comes on, like you said, usually when there is an emissions fault.  The most likely culprit, a loose gas cap.  Saturn, well GM in general, has been plauged by what are called "EVAP" codes.  These Diagnostic Trouble Codes relate to the evaporative emissions system.  There are four kinds of DTC's, we will briefly talk about three.
1.  Class A-hard fault that could cause damage to engine, SES flashes
2.  Class B-hard fault that won't cause immediate damage, SES on steady
3.  Class C-intermittent fault that can degrade engine performance, SES light on when condition occurs, off when system is OK.

You have a Class C fault.  The DTC needs to be looked at by someone who knows Saturns.  If you can find out what the DTC number is, I can guide you in the right direction.  Otherwise, it could be a wild goose chase with no end in sight.  I hope this helps, let me know how it turns out.
