Saturn Repair: Air Conditioner Compressor, air conditioner compressor, saturn l100

Question
My clutch went out on the AC Compressor on my '02 Saturn L100.  I wanted to know what is the best method for getting in there to replace the clutch and  should I just go ahead and replace the whole unit.  I was thinking about going through the right side wheel housing and coming up from beneath?  Do you have any other ideas on how to get to the AC unit?  Thank you

Answer
Dennis,
Given that your vehicle is an 02 L100, (2.2L 4-cyl) I would attack that problem from the bottom.  Without disconnecting the hoses from the compressor (DO disconnect all mounting brackets from the lines) you should be able to wiggle the compressor enough to remove the clutch, with the clutch pointed about 45 degrees to the ground.  If you didn't have enough room to do that, you could always use that little triangle area in the front corner of the cradle.  I don't think that you can get to enough of the compressor if you go through the wheel housing.
Another idea:
This one would take a little more effort, but might help you get to the clutch end of the compressor.  I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY IF YOU CHOSE TO DO IT THIS WAY.  With that being said, I have seen it work in the past.  Jack the passenger side of the vehicle up.  Unscrew all 5 of the cradle bolts on the passenger side (not all the way, and with something under the cradle to support the weight of the engine)  Use the center cradle bolt as a "hoist" for the cradle.  You should be able to get 4 - 6 inches out of this.
Anyway, if you have any other questions about this just let me know.  I can help walk you through this.
