Saturn Repair: 2000 Saturn SL2 noise, 2000 saturn sl2, saturn sl2

Question
I have a 2000 Saturn SL2 with 95000 miles on it.  I've not had too much trouble with it, but recently there's been a frequent high-pitched rubbing noise near the passenger side tire/engine.  It comes and goes, mainly at 45-50 mph, increases in volume until I touch the brake, and then it stops.  Any ideas on what it could be?  I had the brakes replaced a year and a half ago.  To add to the confusion, the past couple times I've started the engine, it sort of rumbles and idles roughly with a bit of a bounce for a few seconds.  I'd appreciate any help you can give!

Answer
Hello,
For your frequent high pitched rubbing noise I would probably have the wheel bearing inspected.  If the noise only gets louder as you drive faster, I would suspect this to be the culprit.  However worn brake pads can cause the same type of noises.
For the rumble/rough start, I would probably inspect the ECT sensor.  It is on the driver's side of the cylinder head just behind the coolant outlet hose.  It comes out with a deep 13-mm socket and some persistance.  Make sure that the business end of the sensor is not cracked or discolored in any way.  Hope this helps!
