Saturn Repair: cylinder 2 failed, smog test, valve seals

Question
The check engine light comes up. The cylinder 2 failed. did not pass a smog test in california. What can you tell me about this?

Hi Leo,
the Engione Code is most likely referring to the fact that the valve seals or guides are worn on the #2 Cylinder and it is causing a higher pass of oil into the cyliner which causes the emissions test to fail. There is no easy fix that I can recommend but, on the positive side, it is probably not too much to worry about as far as driving it is concerned.  You don't mention the model but the SL2 1992-1998 is notorious for oil consumption and code errors relating to the #1 or #2 Cylinder.  It could also be that the rings are worn but that is less likely.
