Saturn Repair: Not starting, saturn sl2, auto parts store

Question
I get in the car to start it and it won't turn over it starts out with a humming sound and fades into nothing. The more I try to start it the less it does. I just got it out of the shop today and they replaced the egr valve. I was thinking it could be a battery problem. I am getting uptight cause it was a used car and the warranty is only good for 30 days they have had it in the shop twice in two weeks. I am at a loss for what to do since I don't have the money to keep putting in this plus the payments. It is a 94 Saturn SL2. I love the car but what would you do? I also put fuel injecter cleaner in it also.

Answer
The humming that fades is more than likely the starter itself but could be the battery not sending a strong charge to it.  Also, and this is common, the cables that connect to the battery and starter go bad.  I had that happen on my 1993 SL2.
The cables are relatively cheap (about $16 for a pair of Positive and Negative) at an auto parts store. Veronica, my wifes also suggests that you check the alternator...they, too, go bad and can cause the drain on the battery.
Hope all goes well,
Greg and Veronica Moore
