I have a 93 saturn, 4 door sedan, 4 cylinder twin cam, automatic. It has just turned 100,000 miles. Excepting minor problems, it's been a trouble free, if rather tame, little ecno box...
Recently, it began to stall, occasionally, when you put it into gear. Somehow, the problem is alway worse when the car heats up to operating temperature? I changed the plugs, pvc, and egr valve, which did nothing? I increased the idle speed to about 1000 rpm, which seemed to have made the problem even worse?
In the last few weeks, I noticed it is now occsaionally stalling at traffic lights too. With the idle screw completely removed, it is now ideling at about 1100 rpms? I really thought I had solved the problem, when I noticed that while standing still, in park, hitting the breaks will make the engine rev up and then stall.
In the old days, before the emission and computer junk, this problem was always caused by a vacume leak. Unfortunately, the power brake booster and hose checked out fine, as did whatever other hoses I could find?
Compression is good and the engine, otherwise, runs smoothly, with plenty of power, considering were talking about a mouse here..... So I think the engine/valves are basically sound? The plugs appear normal, so it seems to be running neither rich or lean, so I could sure use some imput here? I was once an auto mechanic, but haven't worked on cars since the 1970s, So I don't have a lot of the newer diagnostic equipment, but I've got some common sense... Can you come up with a possible culprit here, before I go off and bring this thing to one of those diagnostic joints, who never get it right, or fix a God Dam thing anyway.... :-)

HI well i think th ebeest thing to do would be clean the throttle body with a tooth brush and cleaner and put that idle screww back in and let me know from there

Thanks, I will clean up that throttle body and get back to you. Unfortunately, I've never had much luck with the "Cleaning" concepts :-( It never seems to have done anything for me in the past, on other cars, so I sort of just skipped doing that.... I still don't understand how it is ideling so fast, or how that could be caused by a dirty throttle body, but it's sure worth checking out... One other thing I forgot, is the oxegen sensor. Have you ever seen a problem like this caused by a bad one? The trouble here is that everything you "change" begins to add up to some respectable $$$ Anyway, Thanks for responding... I'll let you know how I make out....

Hi also has the check engine light been on ? i have never seen an o2 cause high idle but i have seen and iac motor or a coolant emp sensor do it has the service engine soon light been on?

Before I bore you with another book, let me find the time to clean up that throttle body... But No? The "Check Engine Soon" light, which has glowed brightly in every car I've ever owned, since the day I bought them, has never gone on in the Saturn, even now that it stalls constantly? Unfortunately, your getting in to names now, of parts and electronic gadjets, that didn't even exist, when I had my last encounters with cars and dinosaurs.... :-)

Hi now thqat it stalls all the time ...does it only do it when cold or hot?in park or gear?
It began to drop idel speed badly, when you put it into gear.(automatic)Then it began stalling, but only when you put it in gear. Now it stalls constantly, when you put it in gear, or stop at a light? It is also a lot better, when the engine is cold. It becomes worse when the engine is at operating temp? What confuses me even more, is, while in park, pumping the breaks will make the idel seed surge and it will then stall, even without load? Like I said, in "My Day", those symptoms were almost always caused by a vacume leak,or rich mixture, but I don't see any problems to indicate either?
That's why I decided to bother Your poor ass, I'm just stumped? :-(

Hi it sounds like an iac motor which controles the amount of air the car need to idle but it usually have a code when it acts up.
PS how did u know i was poor.
Seems I answered this already, but the text didn't show up, after I clicked on send? Anyway, Ha, Ha, Ha, Even though I've been taking those phycic pills, I bought on the internet, I'm still not to good at guessing anyone's business? That's why I'm still married... I, obviously, know nothing about your finances. I was refering to my being a "Pain" in your... It was My way of simply saying Thank You, for all your efforts... I did manage to remove and clean up the throttle body yesterday. It was really filthy with carbon and the clean up didn't solve the problem 100%, but it's sure a lot better!!! I will try to find that iac doohicky you mentioned and replace/clean or what ever it, if I ever find it? About that word "Code"... I don't have an engine analizer, so I don't really know if it shows up or not? The garage I unfortunatly use, doesn't seem to use one either? It seems They just replace the most easy and expensive part they can find and return the car still broken, with their bill on the dash...... Thank You!!!

Answer
The codes are easy ro get out of that car all u do is take  apiece of wire stripe both ends look under the dash u will see the port for the scanner and cross A and B push the wire right in then turn the key on and the codes will flash have a pen and paper ready ther will be FLASH FLASH pauseFLASH FLASH FLASH thats code 23 for example then it will do another code itd ok if u miss it the first time because it will do it three times ina row so u can write it down ...have fun good luck
