Saturn Repair: sluggish engine after (x) amount of fuel is spent, 2000 saturn sl1, saturn sl1

Question
OK guys....2000 Saturn SL1, 126000 mi.  This problem started 6 months ago.  My car simply died when traveling the freeway to work.  Pulled over, restarted (after numerous attempts to keep the engine running) very sluggish could barely keep the engine running.  Made it to a gas station, filled up, problem solved.  Thing is I still had a-gallon-and-one-half in the tank.  This lasted for awhile, I'd just fillup when I hit one-quater of a tank. No problem.

This progressevly got worse, very slowly at first.  Eventually, the engine would sputter and die when I still had four-and-one-half gallons of fuel in the tank....then 6 gallons....then 9 1/2 gallons.  At this point, with only 2 1/2 gallons of usable fuel it's getting ridiculous.

Hello dealer...they suggested replacing the factory O2 sensor, fuel filter, plugs and wires, fuel pump and catalytic converter.

They replaced the O2 sensor, fuel filter, plugs and wires as I couldn't afford the rest.

This seemed to help a little.  I'm now back to 6 gallons of usable fuel.

I'm stumped!  If it's a pump, why only when the gas reaches a certain level?

Any ideas or suggestions greatly appreciated.

Tom

Answer
Hi well i have seen this probem with olser cars and there is a baffel in the tank that keeps the fuel arount the pump in the take and the older ones brake loose or the hose that connects the pump to the fuel line has a hole in it and when the fuel is up over it its ok ..but i dont understand it getting worse. i will do some asking around. good luck
