Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): alternatorstator

Question
I WAS WANDERING I HAVE ROOM TO PUT AN ALTERNATER STATOR TON AN 8HP BRIGGS AND STRATTON ENGINE DO I NEED A FLYWHEEL WITH MAGNETS INSIDE THE FLYWHEEL TO POWER AN LIGHT ON AN SNOWPLOWER LET ME KNOW THANKS SCOTTIE COCHRANE HAVE A GREAT NIGHT

Answer
You would need a stator and a flywheel with magnets inside it.  Briggs offers several different stators.  A basic stator produces AC which is converted to DC via a diode.

If you go with just an AC you will need and AC light...yes they do make them for mowers.  If you plan to use an auto style DC light you just need the diode style...very common.  If you want the light to be a constant brightness then you need a regulated output.

You will see Briggs has a couple of external stators but I do not believe these will work on your engine.  They usually only bolt to 12 cubic inch blocks common on lawn mower engines.

8 HP flywheels are pretty common.  Have you checked to see if your flywheel has magnets inside it?
