Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Removing the flywheel on a Briggs & Stratton 28M707, briggs stratton, sized socket

I have an older 13HP B & S engine (model 28M708, type 0137 01, code 104D)) on a Sears riding mower (model 917.257632) with worn flywheel gears (made of plastic!) which makes it tricky to start. I've already replaced the starter gear, which was also worn. I want to replace the flywheel gear and I'm having trouble removing the 15/16" nut holding the flywheel down. Is it reverse threaded? Is there some trick to removing it?

Remove the flywheel housing cover from the Briggs engine. The flywheel housing cover will be bolted over the flywheel which is located on the opposite side of the crankshaft on the Briggs engine. Remove all the bolts holding the cover on and pull it off.

Position the flywheel holder over the fins on the Briggs engine flywheel. Have a helper fit the correct sized socket on the flywheel nut in the center of the flywheel. Hold the flywheel holder as they unscrew the nut.

Screw the Briggs & Stratton flywheel puller tool into the top of the flywheel. The two bolts on the puller will screw into the holes on opposite sides of the center of the flywheel. Tighten each bolt on the puller one turn at a time to evenly lower the puller onto the top of the flywheel. The downward pressure will pop the flywheel up and off the Briggs & Stratton crankshaft.

Pull the flywheel key off the crankshaft from under the flywheel and place it in a safe place.
