Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 8hp Kohler pull cord, pawls, tiller

Have an older model troybilt tiller with the 8hp Kohler motor. Recently had the pull cord replaced but after bolting it back on it would not engage the motor when pulling cord. I put it back on the same way I removed it, any suggestions. This is a manual start by the way.

Go to Kohler's website and download the service manual...for free!

I would remove the starter and start by watching the starter pawls as you pull the string.  The starter pawls should come out when you pull the string.  

Can you attach a picture of the starter?
