Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 2000 Ezgo running eradic, ezgo golf cart, carburetor linkage

Question
QUESTION: Hi, I have a 2000 Ezgo golf cart with a 4 stroke 295cc motor.  It runs fine most all the time, but occasionally will run half speed and then all of a sudden kicks in to normal speed.  I just put a new carb, air filter, fuel filters, and plugs in but it still does the same thing. Any ideas what I should be looking at next?  Thanks

ANSWER: What brand of engine is on the cart?  Is the throttle control sticking or binding?  Does the engine idle fine?

Let me know.

Eric

QUESTION: Eric, I think the engine is a subaru.  Did not see anything sticking.  There is no idle, it is run or stop. The problem was there before installing the new carb.  When I start it and go sometimes it will be running half speed and then it will just kick in and sometimes after it kicks in it sometimes will kick back down to half speed again.  Could it be the coil or the fuel pump?  Thanks

Answer
I doubt the ignition coil is the problem.  It would have to be a very sophisticated ignition system to cause the problem you described.  I have seen one ignition module with a unique problem but the problem was consistent...would not run at all on high speed.

It could be a fuel pump but without knowing the engine it is difficult to know what type of fuel pump is on the engine.  Is there any way to watch the carburetor linkage when the problem occurs?

I am wondering if something is binding in the governor system.
