Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): tecumseh HM100 159400R, tooth flywheel, ebay

Question
I have the above engine on a 34 ton log splitter , due to my age I would like to convert to electric start.  I am having difficulty locating part number to a tooth flywheel.  I did find one from a 10hp chipper (battery start) however it is smaller in diameter could not locate p/n only has cast numbers 118P and 13-0 50.  Any help would be welcomed

Answer
There are many questions that one must answer to equip a Tecumseh engine with a 12 volt starter. Tecumseh does not offer a 12 volt kit. Their engines just come in to many variations.

The first question: Are the mounting bosses (places) machined and drilled to mount a starter? If the answer is no you can stop right here. It can't be done. Next, does the flywheel have a ring gear on it? You must remove the shroud and look. After these 2 questions are answered you need to arm yourself with the answers and the model spec number. Now with that info we can answer your question. And list what individual parts are required.

In addition, it will have to have a charging system installed as well as a wiring harness, solenoid, and starter switch plus a batttery box, battery, battery hold down... fueses and much more.

I believe the Tecumseh 611093 Flywheel is the one you need.  You will also have to buy an alternator.  Does the block have the mounting bosses for an alternator?

Would is be easier and not much more money to just buy a new or used engine?

Here's one on Ebay, you can email and ask if it has a 12 volt starter.

Used flywheel are around $90, alternator $20, starter $40-100.  Guessing at least $250 by the time you are done.  New engine?

You could buy one of the cheaper China made Honda knock-off engines for less than $350.  They run pretty good.   The only downside is finding parts if/when you need them.  You will have to order online and they usually just sell complete carbs rather than overhaul or individual parts.

For the money they are hard to beat...just not USA made.
