Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): KAWASAKI FC54OV JOHN DEERE, fuel mixture, shutoff valve

How do I determine what is causing my engine to backfire during starting? 120lbs compression. Good spark. No fuel. however, when I spray WD40 in the carb the spark ignites the fuel mixture. The fuel shutoff valve seems to be working. Carb bowl is full of fuel.

Is the flywheel key sheared or a valve sticking?

Google "Kawasaki FC540 manual pdf" and you will find the manaul describing how to check the valves.

You can remove the spark plug and valve cover and then try to start the engine while watching the valves to see if there is any sticking.
