Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Scotts 17/42 Rider mower, front wheel bearings, rider mowers

Question
QUESTION: Hi, Are these machines good quality? Briggs Intek motor good? Most important, are parts still available ? I have a chance to buy one thats nice shape.  Thanks !!

ANSWER: How old is the mower?  Some of the Scotts were made by John Deere.  Intek engine is a decent engine.  I really don't have an engine preference these days but as a rule Briggs engines are easier to find parts than Kohler, Kawasaki, and Honda.  From a parts perspective, I guess I prefer Briggs.

Have you checked the belts, blades, and tires?  Front wheel bearings?  These are the parts that wear the most and can get expensive to replace.  Blades can cost anywhere from $15-35 and belt can be as high as $100.  Make sure the blade adapters are in good shape as well.  If there is any string, twine or wire wrapped around the blade adapter or blade housing the bearing race cover may have been damaged and the bearing might have some pre-mature wear.

QUESTION: Thanks Eric ! The Scotts is John Deere made but not sure of the year. Good shape tho. Bearings and all other parts still available? I wont buy it if I cant get parts.Parts available ? Cross reference parts from other rider mowers? John Deere still stock parts for these? Transmission/rear end parts avail. ?  Thanks !!

Answer
Parts shouldn't be a problem to get if you need them.  Which transmission does the mower have?  There will be a manufacturer name as well as a model number on the transmission.

I would Google the transmission brand and model and see if there are any posts about the model in the mower.
