Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Snowflight 5/24 with Tecumseh Engine HS50-67175C, air gap, screw driver

Question
Hi Paul,

I need some advice. I have a Snowflight 5/24 with Tecumseh Engine HS50-67175C and it the plug doesn't get spark. Here is what I have bought new: coil, condensor, spark plug, and points. I have set the points to .010, .020, .035 inch and still can't get this thing to spark. So my next logical thought is that the kill switch is defective or that the ground isn't grounded.

Any ideas what I should do?

Thanks,
Gary Shelton

Answer
Hi gary

is there a air gap ?  remove the ground kill wire going to the stop switch and retest - if still no spark  pull wire off at coil - retest- if no sparks  - wire gounding between stop switch and coil  disconnect anything that could interfere with  coil operation ,  if still no spark - remove coil from mount  clean earths and make sure coil is grounded - refit - set air gap , retest , if still no spark ( you have replaced points , condenser  and coil , ) possible  bad kill switch  or at worst  bad coil , check wires, earthing , switching 1st ,  are the flywheel magnets ok   , see if still have good magnetic strength- test with screw driver

take a look

cheers  paul
