Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): h70 7 hp tech, horizontal shaft, crank case

Question
Paul, having a little bit of a problem on a 7hp,i have a motor from a uncle to fix, after take the side of crank case off the gov. gear exploded,so i put a new one in and new gasket and seal, started it up and it ran like crap couldn't get any adjustment out of carb,so pulled it off took it apart and soaked it for 12 hrs. in cleaning solution put in new parts started it up and adjusted it,now it runs great on high speed but now it speeds up and down on slow to idle speed and can't adjust it out, do you have something that i can try. thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi  Jim   I presume this engine is a horizontal shaft  7 hp tecumseh  side valve
here is generalized  h70 web site

sounds like either  carb fault / restriction or governor needs adjustment.

did you verify that all passages ere indeed clean and clear with compressed air  and some  crc  sprayed / blown through jets and openings ?,   is fuel flow good and breatther ok ?

all  air bleeds and jets must be clear ,  fuel level must be correct,
does it get better with mixture adjusted richer  or worse  ?

try govenor adjustment -:  horizontal shaft machines below

with engine stopped, loosen the screw holding the governor clamp on the governor lever.  turn the clamp clockwise on horizontal shaft engines , then push the governor lever connected to the throttle  to wide open position , hold this position and tighten the clamping screw

note always be ready to stop engine  if overspeed occurs  -

note here is web site for service manual download

cheers  paul   hope this helps
