Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): small engine, briggs stratton, starter clutch

Question
How do I set back up the timing on a 3hp 1 cylinder engine(briggs & stratton)

Answer
Hi  nicole

firstly  does this engine have points or magnetron system ?

if a magnetron system all that is required is the feather-timming key in the flywheel
and a 0.010 thous air gap between the flyheel magnet and the coil legs
and everything to stay fixed in position

but if a point system , set air gap as above  , points are under the flywheel , under a small cover  , rotate flywheel untill the points are at there widest, then  slightly loosen the screw holding the fixed point face  of the points and adjust the gap to 0.020 thou with a  feeler gauge and tighten clamping screw, refit point cover, and refit flywheel and timming key , tighten flywheel nut or   starter clutch down  and fit screen , and set air gap
refit blower cover  and starter assy - let her rip

hope this helps
