Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Jd 318, neutral safety switch, safety circuit

Question
Have a 318 JD  Converted from electronic ign. to the old points. runs fine and then stops after a indeterminate time. The last time it happened removed the two purple wires from the neutral safety switch and shorted them together and tried to start nothing. No voltage at the coil. SO tries jumping the systems and went from the + battery terminal to the point side of the coil turn the key and started right up. Removed the wire and stopped. Replaced the connections on the neutral safety switch and still no start. The pto will light but not engage by the way. SO made a jumper out of clips and a fuse and wire and drove the tractor back to the barn. It is baffling to say the least. All points to the control module but there is no way to test it. About ready to replace it with a common 12 volt heavy duty relay and do away with the module since they are over $200 locally. Any other maybe simple thing s I am over looking. If it run by py passing the whole system and running from a jumper that shows that the ign portion is working properly without the safety in place. Thanks

Answer
I have had some interesting safety circuit issues over the years.  Once had to solder the seat safety switch wires directly to the switch as the terminal plug was causing the problem.

Have you checked each safety switch with an ohm meter and cleaned all the connections?  You could certainly remove the module but if you ever need service most shops will not work on the mower due to safety and liability issues.

Why did you covert the engine to points?
