Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B&S mod 130292, 5 HP, google images, carb adjustments

Question
QUESTION: Problems with above engine on roto-tiller.  Plowed only about 2-300 SF and died.  Would start and die & finally not start at all. Happened twice.  Engine has no points & condensor.  I have installed new spark plug, rinsed carb with cleaner & installed new carb diaphragm.  Checked spark & I think that it is OK.  It starts better but now cannot get many RPMs out of engine at full throttle. Ease back on throttle from full & engine dies. I have double checked the 2 linkages that I had to remove to remove carb & best I can tell, they are back right.  Do you have any ideas?

ANSWER: How old is the engine?  Is the carb a fixed jet or adjustable jet.  Only old carb are adjustable.

Are you sure the linkage and governor spring are properly connected?  There are lots of pictures and videos showing how the linkages and governor spring should be connected.  You Tube and Google Images has great info/pics on Briggs 5 hp carb and/or governor linkages.

Let me know if you have an adjustable carb.

QUESTION: The tiller is 1981 vinage, but has seen relatively few hours.  Carb has adjustable jets.  After 1st incident, I had tried various jet adjustments without success.  I took it to a small motor shop & told them that I could not start the tiller.  After 2 weeks, they got around to it and when they tried to start, it did.  They said that the carb adjustments were off and adjusted, charged me a minor amount and told that I didn't have a problem.  That's why I am attempting to handle myself this time. I feel that the carb adjustments are probably right since they did them. I have attempted to confirm the linkages again yesterday.  I feel that if there is a problem there it may be the governor.  I will see what I can find on the web and check again.  Thanks for your response.

ANSWER: This video is a little newer than your engine but the connections are very similar.  You governor spring may be different but connects in the same location.

Do the linkages move when you adjust the throttle?  Make sure they are not sticking/binding.

It is often easier to verify the spring connection if you remove the starter housing (remove 3 bolts) and remove the starter.

QUESTION: Links are great.  Checked linkages and all appear OK.  Started tiller without air cleaner so I could access linkages.  Started OK but at low RPM even tho throttle at max - ran smooth.  Was able to rev engine to what sounded like max by moving throttle butterfly manually against governor spring tension.  Tried plowing about 1/2 depth for a few feet & it did OK even tho RPM's stayed low.  Will put to a heavier test later.  Hopefully all is well.  If not, maybe the governor linkage SOMEHOW?? changed.

Thanks for the help!!

Answer
Those older 5 hp can be temperamental engines...they always have been especially on tillers.

I still suspect something is up governor spring or linkage since it runs slow.  It the cable actually moving the throttle to full speed position?  Throttle cables were another issue on older tillers.
