Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Honda GX31 - how to split the crankcase, honda fg100, piston rings
Honda GX31
Hello - I am attempting to replace the piston rings on a Honda GX31 engine from a Honda FG100 rototiller. I have removed the engine from the tiller and have partially dismantled it but am now stuck.  I cannot open the crankcase.  I have removed the flywheel and the starter pulley. I have also removed 6 screws that hold the crankcase together, but cannot pull it apart. Please help! How do I split the crankcase? Thanks for whatever advice you can offer.

PS another expert on this site suggested tapping the crankcase with a dead blow hammer.  I'm asking for a second opinion.  Again, thank you.

The problem with these Honda cases is that when they are built they are torqued down and the gaskets after time actually seal them selves like glue on the case. This makes it hard to split them try soaking them in a solution of hot soapy water,if you plan on completely taking the engine completely apart.if not spray them with the solution and let it sit for a night they try splitting them, i would avoid using a hammer as the cases are cast and they may get damaged.
