Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Sears Blower/Vac 358-797342, 2nd degree burns, head gasket problem

Question
I bought this on EBAY as it looked in excellent condition and was told in had good compression.  Now that I am test running it, there seems to be more problems that were not disclosed.

White smoke when running.   Newer gas seems to have nearly cleared this up but it still smokes a bit.

Muffler bolts do not stay tight on.

Runs and gets hot - outside of case is warm to touch enough I think to cause 2nd degree burns (Side where spark plug is).  Would a wrong size spark plug cause this?  Solenoid going bad?

I am aware of the head gasket problem.  Wouldn't bother me to try and repair but there are other issues that I am not sure about and I am getting the feeling I'd be wasting money.

Hi, white smoke is not a good sign!! It sounds like the head gasket is leaking! have you been using the blower prior to the white smoke? Most of the time it is from not mixing the right amount of oil with the gas! It is possible that it is the spark plug but it sounds like the head gasket! The reason the bolts don't stay in is because it is getting hot and expanding to much. make sure the oil/fuel is mixed correctly.
The mixture is critical in these small units. If you are running 45:1 instead of 50:1 you are causing more rapid wear and your machine will not last as long as it was made to.
To a point it is better to have more oil than less in the mixture. But it is a fine point. Too much oil will not only foul your sparkplug and carbon up the combustion chamber, it will also clog the exhaust port causing the engine to run much hotter than normal, causing wear related to overheating. So, stick with what the manufacturer recommends.
