Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Tuffcut 210 wheel dust cap, drive pinion, power mechanism

Question
I broke the wheel dust cap, (part #89) on my tuffcut-210.  I ordered a new one, but the remnants of the old are still surrounding the power mechanism.  How do I remove the grooved axle looking part so I can replace this part with the new one?  I don't really want to break any parts that should not be broken.

Answer
Did you remove the wheel to expose the drive pinion gear?  If not, remove the wheel.

Remove the drive pinion gear by removing the C-clip or retaining ring.  Pull off the pinion gear.  It may be tight, sort of stuck on the shaft due to dirt/rust.  Make sure you pay attention and do NOT loose the key or spring that is under the pinion gear.  With the gear off you can remove the old dust cover and install the new one.

Does this help?
