Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): briggs and stratton engine, garden tractor, briggs and stratton, bolt pattern

Hello.  I have to replace my B+S engine in a Craftsman 19.5hp tractor.  The B+S model number is 42E707-2631-E1.  I do not know how to check if any other brands may be compatible, as I am not having much luck finding an exact replacement--even on B+S sites.  I found an engine for sale on line, but the number was
42A707...I want to make sure if that is compatible or not.  So, please let me know if you could: 1) would this latter mentioned engine work, and 2) are there universal engines that I could find to replace mine?   Thank you for your time.

This engine does not have a replacement the only thing you can do is get a new short block.
The engine 42A707 You would have to have all the measurements for the Shaft and bolt pattern. Also the alternator would have to match up as well as the wiring harness,it is not that simple to just use a different engine.Even with Kohler you will find a problem. The best bet is to rebuild or do a lot of measuring.
