Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): lawn mower starter, retaining ring, lawn mower

hi i am trying to get the gear off my lawn mowers starter... i got the clip off but now i cant get the round metal piece off i thought it just came off but thats not happening so i was wondering if you had any ideas... thanks

usually the clip holds the retaining ring then you would have to spin the gear to remove it. If you give me a engine brand model # and any other numbers on this engine I can be more precise with my answer,other than that I am just guessing also.
