Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Transmission Pulley, transmission pulley, chris answer

Question
QUESTION: Hey Sir, I have a 2007 20 hp Craftsman mower that my boys and I are customizing as a play toy. I need to remove the large pulley from the transmission and need to know if the pulley is screwed of clock wise or counter clock wise. Would you happen to know? Thanks for any help, Chris

ANSWER: What is the mower model number? The model number will be located on a sticker, about the size of a business card, usually located under the rear seat or fenders.  The model number format will be something like xxx.xxxxxxx

Let me know the model number so I can look up your mower.

QUESTION: Sorry Sir, I gave the number to an extra mower. The one we are working on is 917.287130. Thanks for your patience

Answer
On that unit there is a clip holding the transaxle pulley to the shaft.  Did you remove the clip?

I'm guessing the pulley is stuck/seized on the shaft...happens most of the time.

Try soaking the pulley/shaft with PB Blaster or other good penetrating oil.  Let is soak.  Use a small hammer and gently tap on the pulley and shaft.  If you can use a long punch you can gently tap on the pulley near the trans input shaft.  All you are trying to do is to create gently vibrations to help the penetrating oil soak in to loosen the parts.

Why do you need to remove the pulley?
