Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): briggs & stratton engine 5hp 130292, briggs stratton engine, briggs stratton

Question
second hand equipment, ie i think it been apart before, sold not running.
claened valves, lapped, seal ok.
cleaned carb, seams ok.
on starting it will fire one time and the nothing or backfire.
just dosnt want to kick on.
put han over carb and it seams to be blowing out carb rather than sucking in?
is it posible the valve timing vs spark is 180 deg out.
i cant tell were the spark firing gap machined in flywheel is needed to be in relation to the cycle.
does that explain the type of spar system.
im at a lose for explaining why such a good condition engine will not start.

Answer
What did you set the valve clearances at?

Have you checked the flywheel key?  Doubt the key is sheared but I would verify.

I've read where some have said they have got the cam timing off by 180 degrees but I have never experienced it.  When you were working on the valves did you follow the engine strokes and watch the valves open/close to see if the timeing was correct?  You can also check for valve overlap at top-dead-center.  You will probably not see the valve overlap but you can feel both valves just barely open at one of the TDC strokes.  Valve overlap will never fail...physics dictate that it must be there in 4 cycle engine.
