Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Peerless H2000 006A, poulan pro lawn tractor, doityourself com

Question
Hello, I have a 2005 Poulan Pro lawn tractor model 96012002800, catalogue # BB185H42LT. I am having problems with the hydro transaxle. When it is cold and you push the hydro lever forward or reverse, it just don't want to go and makes a grinding noise but after it warms up a bit it will go.

The transaxle is a Peerless H2000 006A. Could there be an easy fix for this?

Please point me in the right direction if you can.

Thank You

There is a repair kit available for your model.  Check out the following link:

I fould the info below on another site:

Order Tecumseh items:
799032 Repair kit
2 qts 730228a
670384 Alignment tool
1 bottle 730229b (I bought some synthetic oil at Advance auto instead)
1 tube of Permatex RTV grey
gasket remover
anti-seize

The kit has some bare-bones instructions with it. Basically the problem is the spline and the planetary gear. The design is poorly done and it causes the teeth on both parts to get worn away. The kit is supposedly a better design, seems to have deeper teeth. All the work is done on the trans-axle, the parts in the transmission were accessible without opening the transmission. Skills needed are mid-level.

Based on a little searching I would install the kit and change the oil.  You'll probably end up spending a $100 or so but it is cheaper than replacing the unit.
