Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Service/Repair Manual, clutch assembly, starter cord

Question
QUESTION: Hi I was wondering if you know if there are any service/repair manuals available for the Poulan P3818 chainsaw. I have the owners instruction manual. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

ANSWER: There are general service manuals available but it is difficult to find factory, model specific, service manuals.

What problems are you having with the saw?

QUESTION: Hi I'm removing the engine from one saw and putting it in another. Also I was wondering about removing the clutch assembly. I haven't got one of those clutch removal tools could you suggest another way of removing the clutch assembly.
Thanks

Answer
The key to removing the clutch is keeping the engine from rotating.  There are several ways to do this.  There are special tools to lock the piston in place but the inexpensive way is to use some old starter cord and just tie knots in the string.  Insert the knots in the spark plug hole and then just rotate the engine until the piston hits the knots and the engine stops rotating.  You will need several knots.  After removing the clutch just pull out the starter cord...as long as you left plenty of cord hanging out the spark plug hole.

As far as the clutch goes they are usually marked as to which way they loosen to be removed.  You can make a spanner wrench to remove the clutch.

Let me know if this helps.
