Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Kohler Pro 20hp, V-Twin engine, craftsman riding lawnmower, automotive mechanics

Question
I have a Craftsman riding lawnmower with the referenced Kohler engine.  I believe that the engine ran out of oil and froze up.  I am pretty handy with tools and mechanic stuff.  I have a lot of tools and usually repaired my own cars over the years.  I have a 14 year old son and I was wondering if you thought that we might be able to attempt to rebuild the engine as a way that he can learn about small engines?  Is it possible to get service manuals?  Is there a website/video series online that we could watch that might help coach us through this process?  I would appreciate your recommendations even though I realize that you don't really know how to assess my mechanical skills.  I do have a good friend who taught automotive mechanics at a community college for 25 years, and he knows a lot about small engines also.  He would probably be available to provide some assistance also.

The engine Mod. No.: CV624S.  The Spec. No.: 66578.  Ser. #: 3110104151

Answer
The service manual is available at the link below:

You should be able to handle the repair minus any machine shop service.  However, I would dis-assemble and identify what needs to be repaired/replaced and price out the cost of a rebuild versus buying a short block or complete new engine.

I used to overhaul engines up to the mid to late 90s.  Since then labor and parts have increased but whole engines and short blocks prices have gotten cheaper.  It is now cheaper for the customer, and for the shop, just to replace the entire engine.
