Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman Lawnmower starter cord, cast iron engines, starter cord

Question
I have a Craftsman 6.0 self propelled mower. It is probably 18 years old. Model 917-376272, Serial # 042596M 018327. I got the mower started then it died and wouldn't restart. I checked the oil and noticed it was dry (not good, I know). I added oil and now the starter cord is stuck. It will only come out about 6 inches and stops. I can handle most simple repairs but am stuck on how to get to the rope. I removed the housing and got no further. Is this something I can do myself or should I take it into a shop. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Answer
Below are several links on repairing starters:

If your starter has the metal pin holding the starter pulley to the starter pulley housing then I would recommend just buying a new or used starter.  Those pin style starters were really difficult to repair...we eventually stopped trying to repair them as too many came back to the shop after a few uses.

Let me know if the links help.
