Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deere LT 160, positive cable, new spark

Question
I have a John Deere LT 160 that was running great.  I recently tuned up with new spark and filters and oil.  I mowed yesterday and turned it off to clean.  Went to restart and all I got was a click.  I cleaned battery terminals. (Battery new this spring)The lights and the hour display work.  The red wires to the relay and starter felt warm.  What do I do next?

Answer
If fuses and wiring check out good, and you are getting power to the starter, then the starter most likely needs to be replaced. If you disconnect the power wire from the starter, you can test it by hooking a jumper pack, or cables to it. Just make sure you have a good ground and touch the positive cable to the terminal on the starter. If it is working properly, the starter will turn over. If not, it will need to be replaced. If you do try this, make sure the starter it secured to something (on the unit with spark plugs removed, or in a vice) before you test it.

Good luck!
