Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): brakes on jd 175, dowel pins, back pad

Question
i bought a jdeer 175 with no brakes i got a new set of pads my trouble is how to get the disk off to get the back pad in. ant help would be great because i really like this mower. just the people that used to have it did not care and let it go down and i want to bring her back to life

Answer
The disc should slide off the shaft.  If the disc is stuck/seized to the shaft that may be contributing to the no brakes issue.

Make sure you clean the brake dowel pins with a wirebrush to remove all the rust/debris from the dowel pins.  Also, put some steelwool on the end of a small drill bit and clean the inside of the holes where the dowel pins slide in.  If you do not clean these parts the brakes will not work properly.

Do not loose the REINFORCEMENT plate, parts list number 7, part number M47317.  Make sure the little plate is installed or the dowel pins will crack the brake puck.

Finally, you can use a little grease, I use white, on the are that contacts the pins.  DO NOT use too much or get any on the disc or you will not have any brakes.
