Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Briggs & Stratton Back Fires wont start, briggs stratton, fly wheel

Question
I have a B&S 22 horse engine on a lawn mower.  It stopped mid yard.  Did not hit a rock, etc.  When I try to start it, engine spins and back fires through carb.  With air cleaner removed, I tried start fluid.  Same:  back fires through carb.  Pulled fly wheel.  Key looks brand new. Any help will be appreciated.  Blessings, Jon--------

You may want to check your valves for lash, this is the space between the valve stems and the cam shaft. That need's to be on TDC (Top dead center),that is when the piston is on its either exhaust or intake when you check them.

The valve clearance specs for your engine are .004" to .006" (try to set at .005") for both intake & exhaust valves. Also check the key way  that may have been sheared.Look at the paper I sent you it will help you withe valves
