Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): PowerPro Riding Mower, starter solenoid, briggs stratton

Question
I am trying to find info specific to my mower.
Power Pro 46", 18.5hp IC
Briggs & Stratton 42A707-1238-01

Will not start. Been told it is the starter. I hate to purchase the wrong part.
Can you please help me narrow down my info. I am not a mower mechanic.
Who made and sold this mower? How can I get replacement parts for other parts of the mower?

Thanks

Answer
I pretty sure Poulan manufactured the mower.  There should be a model number located on a sticker on the rear of the mower or under the seat or fenders.  The model number sticker usually contains the manufacture's name.

Do you have a voltmeter?  Do you know what the starter solenoid is?  I would start by checking for DC voltage on the solenoid.  If your solenoid has one small wire this wire should have 12 volts DC when the key switch in in the start position, the blades off, clutch depressed, shifter in neutral...all the normal stuff you need to do to start the mower.  When the starter solenoid has 12 volts DC on the small wire this connects the battery to the starter thereby turning the starter.
