Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deere GX 345 Will not always start, pto connections, safety switch

Question
Hello Eric,
I was reading a Q&A between Gary and John from 9/9/07 last night about trouble with a John Deere GX 345 that will not start occasionally. John replied to Gary that the problem was the blade safety switch. I went to the dealer today and this model does not have a blade safety switch. Is there anything else you can suggest? It is well maintained and started every time until this season. I started it every day last week, but yesterday when I was ready to mow, it wouldn't start. Could there be another name for the blade safety switch--the dealer does not have it listed as that? Thanks so much for your help. Mike

Answer
I'm betting your problem is a safety switch.  Did you check the seat and PTO connections?  I have fixed a few problems just by disconnecting and reconnecting the connector.  What about the brake switch?

Do you hear any clicking or anything?

The problem you describe is usually an easy fix...but it can be very challenging to isolate.
