If its starving for fuel. The main fuel jet may be partially plugged. Real easy to check. The main fuel rod (jet) sits vertically right on top of the Kohler Carb. Its the main fuel adjustment screw. Remove it, a 2 to 3in. brass tube is attached to the bottom of it. If you look carefully you will see aprox. 6 very small holes in the tube. you can usually blow them out with air or carb. cleaner. If you can't force carb cleaner out of all the holes you will probably have to replace it. Its available through NAPA. Check/change the spark plug also. Another possibility is a valve problem.

I have had people give me mowers that would only start once you put fuel in the carb and eventually die. The problem was a cracked fuel cap. Look over your cap and give it a shot.
