Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): blower moter, compression gauge, piston rings

Question
my homelite blower ( 2stroke)would not start.I cleaned the carb .It still did not start so I checked compression. It was low ,so I got new piston rings  and installed.the piston was in the down position . so I reinstalled in the down position. The blower still will not start ,but when I pull the starter cord it is easy for two pulls then very hard for the next two.did I mess up the timing?

Answer
Was there an arrow or dot on the piston?  Have you measured the compression with a compression gauge?  Will the unit try to start if you prime the engine with fuel/oil mix?

There really isn't much you can do to screw up the timing...did you install the coil backwards?  That would mess up the timing.

Let me know.
