Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Snowblower Engine, engine go, flapper

Question
Last winter I was running my snowblower under a very heavy strain.  I believe it overheated because it started smoking.  I immediately shut it down.  Now when I start it (it starts fine), the engine immediately begins to rev up to an very high/fast level.  I always shut it down right away because it sounds like it is going to rev to the point of exploding.    Is this a serious issue?  If I let the engine go, is there a chance it will rev to the point of exploding?

Check the governor linkage sounds like some of the springs may have come off. You may want to see when you start the engine that the governor is pulling the throttle back if it is not check it by hand it may have come loose. Also you may have damaged the internal Governor flapper. Which will require a total disassembly.
