Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Ohv cover, fantasy football team, hp briggs

Question
Sorry about email address it's my fantasy football team. I have a simplicity conquest with 16 hp Briggs. Was running fine earlier. Restarted and noticed oil smell and some smoke. Popped hood and found one of the ohv covers bolts had backed out and were gone. Still attached by vent tube. Oil was on engine not tons though. Was not running rough or missing. Put in garage to warm upand melt snow. What are chances it is ok? Does much oil come through that area? Once bolts are replaced and oil is back to proper level anything specific to look or listen for? Other than the obvious leaking or knocking. Thanks jackr

Answer
The most obvious sign of damage would be an engine knock as you mentioned.  There is not a lot of oil required for the valves so the engine should be alright.  Check your engine mounting bolts to be sure they are tight.  Most of time bolts only vibrate loose if the engine is not mounted tight on a solid surface.
