Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Kohler CH12.5s Gov-shaft oil leak, cross shaft, needle bearings

Question
QUESTION: I have a Kohler CH12.5s, spec# 1910, S/n# 2507405064 that is leaking oil from the gov-shaft. After about 3mins of operation, there is a puddle of oil about the diameter of 4" on the floor. This is on a Miller BlueStar 180k welder. the engine has been removed & the back end torn down. Shaft has some minor wear, but nothing too bad. Only found 2-washers on the outside of the shaft, but no seals. I looked this engine up & IPL does not show a seal either. I went to a local dealer & they were not sure if it has a seal or not. I ordered both innner & outer needle bearings & a Gov cross shaft already. My question is, how do you remove those 2-bearings on the cross shaft from the engine casing & 2nd question, how does this seal the oil from leaking out of the cross shaft (orignal prob was throttle was sticking open, even when not using welder & found a bent linkage from carb to gov & that is fixed now, but that's how I found the oil leak).

ANSWER: Hello John:

>>According to My Shop Manual, there is a Cross Shaft Oil Seal Used on this Engine, but as you Noted it is Not Shown in the IPL/Breakdown and I have been Unable to Locate in my Parts List.
>>I will Contact Our Kohler Service Rep on Monday and Confirm the Cross Shaft Oil Seal for you and Provide you with the Seal Part Number if Applicable.
>>I have Replaced Many of these Oil Seals, but the Last One was 2 or 3 Years ago, so I Do Not Recall the Part Number.
>>If I have Not Contacted you with a Follow Up Answer by 6PM Monday, then Please Send me a Follow Up Reminder.
>>I have a Seal/Bearing Puller used for Removing these Seal and Bearings, However, you can Use a Screw driver to Remove them from the Engine Block.
>>Thanks.
>>If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Have a Happy Holiday Season and May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck

QUESTION: Just checking to see if you found out anymore information on this Kohler engine.

Answer
Hi John:

>>They were Extra Busy Yesterday and the Service Rep said he thought there was a an Oil Seal ALso, but he wanted to Check and make Sure.
>>He is Supposed to let me know Today what he Discovered about the Seal and a Seal Part Number if Appliable.
>>Thanks for the Reminder.

Hi John:

>>OK, Here's the Scoop.
>>Due to Some of the Engines having an Actual Oil Seal and Others Using a Special Designed Cross Shaft, the Seal and Part Number are Not Shown on the IPL's or Breakdowns.
>>If the Cross Shaft is a 6MM Diameter Shaft, then the Seal Part Number is 1203201-S and if the Cross Shaft is 8MM, the Seal Part Number is 2803209-S .
>>As Always, If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. I Hope you Had a Happy Holiday and May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.
