Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): fuel pump leak, overhead valve engines, electric fuel pump

Question
QUESTION: Every year I replace the fuel pump on my briggs and stratton 8hp leaf blower engine.  4 years, 4 pumps replaced. Can I eliminate this pump?

ANSWER: Hello Tony:

>>If this Engine is Electric Start or has a Battery, then
>>You can Use an Electric Fuel Pump, Mr Gasket Part Number 12S, that can be Purchased from Advance Auto, NAPA or Auto Zone.
>>The Pressure of this Pump is 2 to 4 PSI and is Designed to be Used on Engines that have a Carburetor and Not Fuel Injection.
>>Have you Replaced All the Hose Clamps with Screw Type Hose Clamps?
>>Usually the Problem with these Fuel Pumps is Not the Pump, but the Hose Clamps Loosening Up and Allowing Air Leaks that cause the Pump to Draw Air when Operating.
>>If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Have a Happy Holiday Season and May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.

QUESTION: John,  Thanks for the response.  The engine is a pull start
8hp B&S Industrial Plus and yes, all of the clamps are screw
type and tight.  Can I replace with a different type of fuel
pump, one that is completely sealed? or any other
suggestions...

ANSWER: Hello Again Tony:

>>Send me the Model and Type or Spec Numbers Off the Engine, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. The Model Numbers May be Stamped Into the Blower Housing (metal engine cover) Above the Spark Plug or the Muffler. Many horizontal shaft, overhead valve engines have these numbers stamped into the OHV rocker cover. However, on certain overhead valve powered generators, the equipment manufacturer installs a decorative chrome rocker cover OVER the Briggs cover. If your engine has a decorative cover, it may be necessary to remove it in order to locate the Model, Type, and Code. If this is a Briggs and Stratton  Engine, then you can Also Use this Site Addy; http://www.briggsandstratton.com/maint_repair/BS_modeltypecode.pdf for Assistance in Locating the Model, Type and Code Numbers of a Briggs and Stratton Engine.

QUESTION: John,  I have manuals that reference Specifications (QB883)
and Parts List (Model Series 196400).  does this help?

Answer
Hi Tony:

>>You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.outdoordistributors.com/ and Select "Click Here For The Parts Menu". Then Select B. Then Select Briggs. Then Select "Click Here If You Don't Have Your Part Numbers". Now Select the File (using the first 1 or 2 Numbers of your Model Number) for your Model. Select the File #19 and the Sub File 196400.
>>I Looked at the Breakdown for this Engine Model Series and the Fuel Pump is Not Replaceable with Another Style Pump.
>>With the Holiday and All its been a Little Hard for me to Research this.
>>I have this Listed to Research more on Monday and will Follow Up if there is a Pump that will Change with this One.
>>Have a Happy Holiday Weekend and May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.
